Two Meeting Street Inn recently received the distinct honor of receiving the prestigious Carolopolis Pro Merito Award from the Preservation Society of Charleston. The annual Carolopolis Awards seek to promote excellence in historic preservation and recognize extraordinary private and public efforts to maintain the historic character and authenticity of Charleston and the Lowcountry. The Pro Merito is awarded to properties that received a Carolopolis at least twenty years ago and have maintained a high standard of preservation or have undergone a second, significant exterior rehabilitation, restoration, or preservation effort.

The 1890s Queen Anne Victorian mansion was purchased by South Street Partners in 2022 with the intention of restoring the property and adding a unique offering to Kiawah Island Club’s collection of world-class luxury amenities. The Inn, originally built in 1892 by Waring P. Carrington and Martha Williams Carrington, is known for its romantic history. It is believed that Martha Carrington’s father left a $75,000 check on her satin pillow as a wedding gift, which was used to purchase and build the home. On their fifth wedding anniversary, the Carrington’s gifted each other two stained-glass Tiffany windows, which were installed on the front of the home and remain in place today. The Inn was managed for 76 years by the Spell family until it was purchased in 2022 by South Street Partners.

The Inn, nestled along picturesque Meeting Street and overlooking The Battery’s famed White Point Garden, has been meticulously restored by a skilled team including e. e. fava architects, Tammy Connor Interior Design, and Tupper Builders. Eddie Fava and his firm spearheaded the sensitive renovation of Two Meeting Street Inn, developing comprehensive plans while coordinating project engineering, landscape and interior design consultants, and navigating city reviews and approvals.

Tammy Connor Interior Design drew inspiration from three core priorities: the building’s architectural history, its setting, and the lifestyle of its interiors. By blending antiques with modern craftsmanship, they created inviting, distinctive spaces. Preserving historical features was paramount, including original Louis Comfort Tiffany windows and intricate oak paneling throughout the first floor.

The Inn’s garden also reflects Charleston’s rich heritage. Renowned landscape architect Elizabeth Pope thoughtfully preserved the site’s original plantings, highlighting the majestic live oaks while retaining historic materials and hardscape elements, such as the tile on the front landings.
