Where to Kayak on Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island contains 10,000 acres of majestic landscapes, including endless miles of interwoven waterways between the Atlantic coastline and the wild Kiawah River. Exploring the Island’s waterways is one of the best ways to take in the natural beauty of Kiawah. While it’s true that Kiawah offers plenty of opportunities for nature excursions, such as bike trails and beautiful beaches, many would argue that some of the most scenic spots on Kiawah Island are only accessible through the local waterways. So, grab your paddle as we boat through some of Kiawah Island’s most pristine kayaking locations!

Where to Start

If it’s your first time exploring the Island’s waterways, the Cassique Boathouse and Kayak Dock is an excellent place to start. Here, our experienced staff will provide you with waterway maps and route instructions before you embark on your adventure. At the dock, there are a variety of single and tandem vessels at your disposal, as well as specially designed fishing kayaks for fishing enthusiasts. Lastly, you’ll find life jackets and paddles in varying sizes for full-family enjoyment.

Head to SeaCoast Sports and Outfitters for the Island’s go-to for anything water-related on Kiawah Island.

The launch point for Tidal Trails adventures is at the Kiawah River bridge, providing easy access to all on Kiawah Island.

Water Dog Paddle Co.

Water Dog Paddle Co.’s guided kayak paddleboard eco-tours also launch from the Kiawah Island bridge and can accommodate all age and experience levels. Choosing the VIP tour option ensures the tour is exclusive to your group and is even led by Water Dog’s lead guide. Kayak rentals are also available at this location at the Bohicket Marina.

Heron Park Nature Center’s paddling tours launch on the scenic Kiawah River from Mingo Point in West Beach. The extensive tours include single and tandem marsh kayaking options, teen kayaking adventures, and romantic adult twilight paddles. Gear rentals are available by reservation for single and double kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

Public Launch Sites

Vanderhorst Plantation

There are three Kiawah Island kayak launch points through Vanderhorst’s second set of security gates. Here, you will find the Rhett’s Bluff boat landing at Bass Pond, Eagle Point Landing, and the scenic Cinder Creek kayak launch on Bass Creek. From Cinder Creek, you can paddle west through creeks and the interior of the Island or head onto Bass Creek to meet the Kiawah River.

Inlet Cove Cottages

Inlet Cove is a grouping of quaint cottages with classic coastal charm. This small community has a riverfront deck and a deepwater dock to launch your stand-up paddleboard or kayak. While this destination is a little challenging to access, it’s worth the trip due to its secluded nature and easy in-and-out for your personal kayak adventures.
