1. Throw a Line

As they say, teach a man to fish… Learning how to fish is often considered a basic life skill, the lesson translating into many other things. Head out to the many ponds across the Island and throw a line in to see what you can catch. In these ponds you’ll find grass carp that can reach up to 70 pounds, freshwater tilapia, bluegill, and largemouth bass.

2. Catch Tonight’s Dinner

Crab is always on the menu when you are spending your summer on an Island. Crabbing is one of the most popular Kiawah Island kid activities — and the most fun, too. Bring a cooler of bait to a dock (crabs prefer raw chicken) and dangle it from a fishing line just below the water’s surface. As soon as you see a crab swim up for it, hurry and catch it with a net! Blue and stone crab live in the rivers and tide pools and are known for their tasty meat.

3. Seek Out the Local Wildlife

Go on a family adventure and take note of the local wildlife of the island. Start by visiting the Nature Center at Heron Park to meet the many species of animals that also call Kiawah home. Among the most exciting wildlife to catch a glimpse of are the local Bottlenose dolphins that inhabit the area. They keep close to the Island’s shores and perform a rare feeding ritual that is a sight to see. Alligators are also commonly spotted and incredible to spot in person, from a safe distance, of course. Also in the waterways are Loggerhead sea turtles, a variety of freshwater and saltwater fish, birds, frogs and lizards, and mammals.

Go on a scavenger hunt and search for the wildlife in our Kiawah Island Wildlife Lookbook. Check each animal off the list as you venture the Island and try to spot them all!

4. Learn to Swing

If your child has an interest in golf, they will love spending time on one of Kiawah’s seven golf courses. Each is renowned for its own particular features, one even being an authentic links-style golf course. If they like to keep tabs on the pros, they will be happy to know that The Ocean Course, home of the 2012 and 2021 PGA Championship, is located here. Bring them for a visit and the chance to play where their favorite players regularly do.

Residents who are Members of the Kiawah Island Club have access to one of the best Kiawah Island kid activities around — the Golf Learning Center. With its high-tech features that can analyze their form, your child can learn the proper way to swing and putt from an early age — giving them a headstart on becoming the golf pro they were meant to be!

5. Cool Off in the Water

The warm weather and endless sunshine can make summers hot, but a dip in one of the Island’s pools or a swim in the sea is always available. Take the family out for a pool day at one of the swimming complexes. Each pool area also offers food and beverage services so the adults can enjoy a cocktail while the kids splash and play.

A day at the beach is always an option, too. Pack up some snacks, towels, and sunscreen, and lounge on the 10 miles of private beach you get to enjoy as a resident of the Island. Pristine, sandy shores with gorgeous views makes for a nice outing together as a family.
