Coming Soon: Kiawah’s First Emergency Medical Facility

As residents are aware, medical options on Kiawah Island are somewhat limited. With very few primary care offices, and even less for specialty care, Island residents would highly benefit from a new healthcare facility. As of now, emergency services are currently not available for any of the Sea Island communities — forcing residents of Kiawah, Seabrook, and John’s Island to travel over 20 miles to downtown Charleston for emergency services. Because the Sea Islands as a whole are experiencing rapid residential growth, it’s crucial that high-quality medical care is available to all those who may need it. 

Fortunately, this will soon change as Kiawah Partners has announced the addition of a brand-new premier medical center. The new healthcare facility will be aimed at providing emergency services, along with several areas of specialty care and expanded primary care practices. 

The new medical center will be spearheaded by the nationally-recognized Medical University of South Carolina. As a top healthcare system, MUSC has the state’s only comprehensive medical center. What’s more, the University is currently ranked as one of the best adult hospitals in the country for cancer, ENT, gynecology, nephrology, and orthopedics specialties. The following pediatrics programs are also nationally-ranked: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology and GI surgery, nephrology, and orthopedics.

Behind the scenes, Kiawah Partners has worked very closely with MUSC to bring this idea to life. Both parties spoke with community members to see what types of services were missing in the eyes of local residents. After five years of considerable planning, both parties are pleased to finally announce the approval of the much-needed Sea Islands medical facility. 

An Inside Look at the Premier Medical Center

Kiawah Partners donated the six acres of land to make this project possible. Plans for the facility consist of a 12,126 sq ft. free-standing emergency room and a second medical office building at just over 10,700 sq ft. Both are expected to be completed by summer of 2022. 

Emergency services provided by the healthcare center will include two trauma rooms, an onsite lab for expedited results, four exam rooms, advanced imaging technology, and a helicopter pad for urgent and top-priority transports. The medical office building will include primary and specialty care offices, along with telehealth pods and physical therapy services.

The medical center’s future location will be located off of Seabrook Island Road near the entrance of the Bohicket Marina and just minutes from Freshfields Village. Adjacent to the facility is the proposed location for the new luxury senior living facility that will also be coming soon to Kiawah Island.
