PGA Championship Returns to Kiawah Island!
In a May 1, 2015 press conference that included leaders from the golf world and the region, The PGA of America announced that the 2021 PGA Championship will be played on Kiawah Island’s famed Ocean Course.
“Ever since The Ocean Course was introduced to the world, it has been a supreme test for the greatest players in golf,” said PGA of America President Derek Sprague. “From a down-to-the-last putt thriller of a Ryder Cup in 1991 to Rory McIlroy closing a record-setting performance in the 2012 PGA Championship, there has never been a shortage of thrills on The Ocean Course. We anticipate that tradition of excellence continuing in 2021 at the PGA Championship.”
The 2012 PGA Championship was a success for viewers and players alike. Weekend coverage of the event was CBS’s 2nd-most watched golf tournament (trailing only The Masters) in 2012. The event was one of the largest in South Carolina history, and had an estimated economic impact of $193 million in the state. Additionally, the PGA of America estimated that Kiawah Island gained over $75 million in media exposure through hosting the event.
“Earning another major championship is a testament to Pete Dye’s great course design, Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s superb golf operations, and the natural beauty of Kiawah Island,” stated Chris Randolph of Kiawah Partners. “A lot of people re-discovered Kiawah Island with the 2012 PGA Championship, and that popularity has continued to grow since the event.”
Kiawah Partners introduced a new neighborhood adjacent to the Ocean Course in conjunction with the 2012 PGA Championship. Ocean Park, which shares an Ocean Course Drive entrance with the golf course, has seen over three dozen homesites purchased in its limited releases. These new Ocean Park owners share a great enthusiasm for the natural eastern tip of Kiawah Island, as reflected in the homebuilding activity in Ocean Park: as of April 2015, 15 homes were under construction or recently completed in Ocean Park.
This summer, Kiawah Partners will begin construction on the Ocean Park Marsh House, a pool and dining amenity with views over the tidal marsh towards the Atlantic Ocean. On that same south-facing edge of Ocean Park are a selection of properties overlooking The Ocean Course, where owners will enjoy the daily beauty of the marsh, long ocean views, and the excitement of a major championship in their back yard.
Ocean Park is offered through Kiawah Island Real Estate, the exclusive real estate offices on the Island.
